Stability AI considers selling following investor's call for CEO resignation
November 30 2023
Stability AI, a British AI startup known for its Stable Diffusion image generator, is reportedly considering a sale amid investor pressure related to its financial health. The London-based company has engaged in preliminary discussions with potential acquirers but remains noncommittal to a sale. Investor tensions heightened when Coatue Management, after leading a valuation round bringing Stability to a $1 billion valuation, demanded CEO Emad Mostaque’s resignation, citing concerns over financial management and a spate of senior departures. Stability AI, which attained unicorn status with a $101 million investment in 2022, has spent significantly to expand, despite modest revenues. However, a spokesperson affirmed Stability AI’s focus on advancing its technology rather than seeking a sale, while both Coatue Management and approached companies Cohere and Jasper have opted not to comment on the matter. The startup’s financial strain has been underscored by its heavy spending against limited revenue, as well as its relationship with investors, including complications stemming from a deal with Intel contingent on the use of their hardware.
