Apple progresses on AI-enhanced Siri and Messages in iOS 17.4 with ChatGPT assistance
January 26 2024
Apple is anticipated to introduce significant new artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities with iOS 18 in June, leveraging a new version of Siri that utilizes large language model technology. Insights from the first beta of iOS 17.4 unearthed by 9to5Mac reveal Apple’s efforts in improving Siri through internal testing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT API, aimed at enhancing its own AI models. A newly discovered SiriSummarization framework in iOS 17.4 calls upon the ChatGPT API, signifying its use for testing new AI functionalities within the system. These developments indicate Apple’s commitment to integrating advanced AI features into its operating system, including potential AI functionalities in the Messages app for tasks like question-answering and auto-completing sentences. Despite using OpenAI for testing, Apple is expected to rely on its own AI models, named “Ajax” among others, for powering these features in iOS 18, showcasing a focused effort to evolve iOS with proprietary large language model capabilities.
