OpenAI introduces new watermarks to DALL-E 3
February 6 2024
OpenAI’s image generator DALL-E 3 will introduce watermarks in the metadata of generated images to support standards set by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), signifying a move towards enhancing authenticity and provenance verification of AI-generated content. These watermarks, which will be present in images created on the ChatGPT website and through the DALL-E 3 API, will feature both invisible metadata and a visible symbol, visible in the image’s top left corner. This initiative allows users to identify the AI tool used to create the content via specific verification websites, although currently, this only applies to still images. Despite concerns that watermarking won’t completely deter misinformation since metadata can be easily removed or lost, especially on social media platforms, this step represents a broader effort, supported by major tech companies, to increase the trustworthiness of digital information amidst growing emphasis on distinguishing AI-generated content.

What does it mean?
- Metadata: Information that provides details about other data. For example, the metadata of a digital photograph might include information about the size of the file, the date the photo was taken, and the camera used.
- Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA): An organization that aims to establish standards for ensuring the authenticity and provenance (origin or source) of digital content. This helps in verifying that the content has not been tampered with and is from a trusted source.
- API: An Application Programming Interface, a set of rules, protocols, and tools for building software and applications. An API specifies how software components should interact and allows different computer programs to communicate with each other.
