Google's Gemini model analyzes hour-long videos but has limited accessibility
February 15 2024
A collaborative research effort has significantly enhanced the data processing capabilities of GenAI models, enabling them to process millions of words—a vast improvement from their previous limitation to hundreds of thousands. This breakthrough has facilitated the development of Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro, the latest iteration in its Gemini GenAI model series. Gemini 1.5 Pro stands out for its remarkable ability to handle ~700,000 words or ~30,000 lines of code, which is 35 times more than its predecessor, Gemini 1.0 Pro. Not limited to textual data, it can also process up to 11 hours of audio or an hour of video in various languages. Despite its experimental stage necessitating a limited preview to certain developers and customers, this advancement is hailed as a significant achievement in facilitating longer, more complex interactions with AI models. Beyond its expanded context window, Gemini 1.5 Pro introduces other improvements for enhanced performance and is exploring pricing for its more advanced capabilities, signaling a promising future for GenAI applications.

What does it mean?
- GenAI models: Types of artificial intelligence models that are trained on large datasets to generate new content or insights that mimic human-like understanding.
- context window: The amount of data (text, images, code, etc.) that an AI model can consider at one time when generating or analyzing content. A larger context window allows the model to understand and generate more complex and coherent content.
