GPT-4 is Now Universally Accessible as OpenAI Releases it
July 13 2023
OpenAI has announced the general availability of GPT-4, its latest text-generating model, which not only improves upon its predecessor by also accepting image inputs in addition to text, but also operates at a “human level” across various professional and academic metrics. Millions of developers have reportedly requested API access, with the company planning to start raising availability limits pending computational availability. Also, OpenAI expects to give developers the option to fine-tune GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 Turbo with their own data later this year. However, it’s worth noting GPT-4 still possesses flaws, such as generating false facts and performing reasoning errors. OpenAI is also making its DALL-E 2 and Whisper APIs generally available, with plans to deprecate old models to improve compute capacity.

What does it mean?
- General availability: In the context of products and services like software or AI models, general availability means the point at which the product or service is available to all intended users or customers. It usually follows a testing phase and signifies that the product or service is considered ready and reliable enough for widespread usage.
- GPT-4: Generative Pretrained Transformer 4 (GPT-4) is one of the AI models created by OpenAI. It's an advanced version that generates text and has the ability to understand and process image inputs as well.
- API: Stands for Application Programming Interface. It's a set of protocols, routines, and tools for building software. In this context, developers can use OpenAI's API to access the capabilities of its AI models in their own applications.
- Fine-tune: In machine learning, fine-tuning is a process where a pre-trained model (like GPT-4 or GPT-3.5 Turbo) is adjusted or 'tuned' for a specific task. OpenAI plans to provide developers with the option to fine-tune these models based on their own data, allowing them to optimize their performance according to their specific needs.
- Deprecate: In software development, to deprecate something means to phase it out. When OpenAI says it plans to deprecate old models, it means it plans to stop supporting these older AI models so it can focus on advancing and supporting its newer models.
