OpenAI enhances ChatGPT's memory
February 13 2024
OpenAI has enhanced its ChatGPT chatbot to remember information from user interactions and apply it to future conversations, aiming to improve its functionality as a digital assistant competing with services like Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa. This new version can recall specific details shared by users, such as preferences or personal information, to create more personalized responses. For example, ChatGPT can generate a birthday card for a user’s daughter, Lina, incorporating previously mentioned likes and details. However, the chatbot is still prone to errors, such as typos. OpenAI is initially offering this updated version to a limited user base, including both free and premium subscribers. Additionally, OpenAI introduced “temporary chats,” which don’t store information beyond the conversation, addressing potential privacy concerns while maintaining the utility of personalized memory. Despite these advancements, concerns about privacy and data use persist, especially considering the ongoing practice of using conversation data to train future versions of ChatGPT while purportedly removing personally identifiable information.
