OpenAI introduces AI that quickly produces impressive videos
February 15 2024
In April, a New York start-up unveiled technology that could generate short, albeit imperfect videos from textual descriptions, marking a notable advancement in artificial intelligence’s capability to create convincing video content. This technological leap was further exemplified by OpenAI’s introduction of a more sophisticated system ten months later, capable of producing high-quality videos that could easily pass for Hollywood production, from woolly mammoths treading through snow to intricately detailed Tokyo street scenes, all generated from brief descriptions. OpenAI, along with other competitors including tech giants and start-ups, is at the forefront of this race, developing technology that has the potential to revolutionize filmmaking, assist in content creation with unprecedented efficiency, and pose threats in terms of creating online disinformation. The technology, named Sora, is currently in an evaluation phase with limited access to outside researchers to assess possible misuse. Despite the advantages, there are concerns over copyright issues and the potential for these AI-generated videos to contribute to job displacement among digital artists and the proliferation of disinformation.
